Vault Run Up is a very important stage of the vault as it is the chance to get all the power and momentum needed to perform a move over the vault.
Coaching Points/Things to Look out For:
- A gymnast should use their arms when running, if the arms are still, they will be missing power. One arm should drive forwards, as the other is behind, the vice versa.
- Shoulders should be slightly in front to allow a better forwards motion.
- Feet should push from flat to toes, to allow the most efficient running. Pure flat feet running will be extremely slow. Same as pure toe running will be both painful and inefficient.
- The knees need to push from bent to straight in a forward motion to get the most power.
- It should not just be assumed that someone knows how to run - it can be very hard to teach. Take time teaching the run up and only move on when the gymnast has a decent understanding.
Drills/Preps for working and improving the back hip circle:
Powerful steps: A folded towel is placed around the gymnasts core and each end is held by a coach, or strong gymnast, behind them. The gymnast then has to try and move while the coach tries to hold them back. This will help them get stronger in their steps and help them see the importance of pushing through their legs and knees and putting all their power into the forward motion.
